Trees under the rime
Around Jizō-san, the trees of Zaō disappear beneath thick masses of snow and rime known as juhyō. Groups of them emerge from the fog. At the top of the ropeway, a thermometer in one of our photos reads about −14 °C that day.
Up close, the rime forms small stacked spikes, growing on one side of the branches. A hiker at the foot of the trees shows the scale of these great white columns.
