Seven stages in the Northern Alps

In September 2009, the traverse links Murodō to Shin-Hotaka in seven days. Plateaus, ridges and cirques follow one another between the huts, with autumn foliage, valleys filled with clouds and stretches in the mist.

We have just returned from a seven-day hike in the Japanese Northern Alps, between Murodō (Tateyama) and Shin-Hotaka Onsen. It is sometimes called the Japanese Haute Route, by analogy with the one that links Chamonix to Zermatt.

In all, we covered a little over 63 km. We had only two days of bad weather, and the landscapes in the mist were just as magnificent. At this time of year, we were able to enjoy the autumn colors, kōyō as they say in Japanese.

The topographic map for the whole week shows the full route (12 MB PNG file).
